TAXIS. Two main types of taxi. Firstly have route taxis (mini vans). These are easily identified by their no. plate as these will always start with “ZR”. Secondly there are the regular taxis, whose numbers are prefixed with the letter “Z”. Taxis are not metered thus fare should be agreed before you start your journey.
Driving In Barbados
Driving is on the left, the same as UK
Minimum age to rent is 21 years and must have been driving with a licence in your home country for 3 years.
Watch out for hazards on country roads such as blind corners. Road signs based on the English system. It is not always obvious who has right of way at intersections. If you do get lost a handy tip is to check the bus stop signs – they say on them either “Out of City” or “ To the City” meaning Bridgetown
Speed limit. 60km/hr on all roads. 80km/hr on highways.
Seat Belts. As at home seatbelts must be worn at all times, heavy fines if seatbelts not worn
Petrol stations. Easy to find along South and West coast and some inland too. You will not find any on the East coast. None are self-service. A member of staff will be there to fill up your car for you.
Drinking and Driving. Don't. As is the case back home the police are very strict about drink driving.
Documents. Very important to carry in car with you your rental agreement and Barbados driving license.
Insurance. In the event of an accident do not move your vehicle until police have arrived and you have been given consent to. Never admit liability, and take down as much information as possible. Call your car hire – as soon as possible.
